What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a highly focused state of attention in which one is able to access a wealth of unconscious resources for self-growth and change. Hypnosis is actually a natural phenomenon, sometimes occurring spontaneously. An example of that is when you have the experience of finding yourself immersed in a compelling daydream, drifting off and possibly discovering a new solution to an old problem. Another name for hypnosis is trance. Trance also occur when you become absorbed in a book, music, artistic creation , or in conversation with another person. A two hour period can seem like half an hour.

YES, HYPNOSIS DOES WORK!!!

What is the difference between Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is now called hypnotism or simply hypnosis, per NY state legislature since 2005. Hypnotherapy is a therapy employing hypnosis techniques. Hypnosis is a technique, hypnotherapy is a method by which this technique is employed. Professionals in a medical field, doctors and psychiatrists conduct sessions while offering treatment. We conduct sessions in a quiet environment, in a convenient location in New York City. Sessions are individual, or dual for family. With programs like weight loss, self confidence, and some anxiety relief programs we offer free CDs with pre-recorded hypnotic suggestions, and also a follow-up session program option. Hypnosis can dramatically improve your health, self-confidence, motivation, creativity, learning, concentration and memory, as well as quickly relieve stress and physical discomfort, reprogram negative and destructive habits, fears and anxiety, and effectively assist in self-discovery and personal quest. What is Hypnotherapy?

Sigmund Freud called hypnotic techniques a "poor man's psychotherapy". Hypnotherapy is really the oldest profession, older than the one you are thinking of. Hypnotherapy utilizes your imagination, teaches you to relax and know yourself, and sometimes learn things about yourself you can be pleasantly surprised about. Hypnotherapy enhances your imagination, creating mental expectancy and bypasses the judgment and preconceived notions, so YOU can achieve anything you want, by simply focusing on your goals through hypnosis.

Hypnotherapy is any therapy, which employs hypnosis as the main means of treatment, with the purpose of positively altering the patterns of behavior, thoughts or feelings of the subjects. This therapy is directed to eliminate feelings of physical or emotional discomfort, alter a person’s thoughts, perceptions and behavior, and direct to further improvement, as per clients’ directions.

Today's hypnotherapy utilizes advanced contemporary techniques to improve one's general health by promoting deep relaxation, improving self-confidence and a sense of well-being. Hypnotherapy utilizes deep ‘meditative’ state and proven behavioral modification techniques in which a client can achieve greater clarity in goal setting and awareness. The techniques allow identifying the causal factors for problems and issues, remaining in the subconscious mind, while in hypnotic state, and releasing the negative, or destructive patterns of habits, through positive suggestions. Although there are many different hypnotic inductions, most include suggestions for relaxation, calm, and well-being. Most people describe the experience of hypnosis as very pleasant.

Hypnosis is not a type of therapy, but a procedure that can be used to facilitate therapy. It has been used in the treatment of pain, depression, anxiety, stress, habit control, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and many other psychological and medical problems. Hypnosis should be used as an adjunct to treatment with a qualified health-care professional who is trained in the use and limitations of clinical hypnosis.

Hypnosis is a very powerful tool to unlock your mind's great ability to heal itself. Hypnosis can be used to modify perception and behavior in a multitude of areas.

Today hypnosis is applied to many problems, issues and challenges in our every day life:

  • Stress Management
  • Weight Loss / Weight Maintenance
  • Stop Smoking
  • Improvement of Self-Confidence / Enhancing Self-Esteem
  • Attaining Success Through Better Goal Setting
  • Relief from Pain
  • Improving Sexual Performance, or Dysfunction
  • Improving Relationships of all sorts
  • Behavior Modification
  • Control Over Fear, Anxiety or Anger
  • Control Over Fear of Public Speaking
  • Relief from Insomnia
  • Eliminating Destructive Habits (Smoking, Nail Biting, Procrastination, etc.)
  • Improving Athletic or Scholastic Performance
  • Enhancing Attention, Memory and Strengthening Concentration
  • Overcoming Grief, Loss, Nostalgia
  • Improving Creativity, Development of Intuitive Powers
  • Past Life and Self Exploration
  • Guided Meditations

In New York Awareness Center clients enjoy a safe and quiet, interactive environment. They are taught stress reduction techniques including breathing exercises and self-hypnosis to facilitate change, receive counseling and learn coping skills and other techniques pertinent to their problems. Between sessions, reinforcement and encouragement is achieved through the use of audiotapes of their hypnotherapy sessions that each client receives to listen to in the privacy of his/her home.

Who can be hypnotized?

Any person who possesses an average intelligence and an average imagination. One only needs to trust the hypnotist and be willing to cooperate. If you feel the need to prove that it won't work, it may not work. Try to relax, remove interruptions, and let your imagination experience in all senses what can be a wonderful experience of healing and achieving your success.

NOTE: Although hypnosis is induced by a qualified facilitator, it cannot be sustained without the continuous induction. In other words, you will "wake up" from the hypnotic state as soon as the hypnotist stops talking.

Hypnotists provide assistance to the client's natural enthusiasm for self-improvement through positive suggestions to their subconscious mind while client is in the hypnotic state. Your hypnotist is your coach, teacher, guide, instructor and trainer.

We are already constantly hypnotizing ourselves.

With each session you will become aware that you may already be giving yourself positive or negative suggestions. Aren't we all sometimes guilty of reinforcing the negative suggestions - I am fat, and I need to lose weight, I am so stupid, why did I do this, I could never do this, or look like this, I don't have enough time/money, I always get into those nasty relationships, I am a loser. Just reading this lines makes you feel bad, doesn't it? Now, become aware of this patterns, and start on the positive track. Learn to speak to yourself as if you are speaking to your best friend, encouraging yourself and acknowledging your successes. Positively reinforcing the better sides and the job well done. And soon you will find that not only your beginning to change to the positive but you also becoming more optimistic in your future and begin to like yourself.

No,  Really, What Is Hypnosis?

There are many fears and misunderstandings about the use of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, and the myths and mystery that surround it are totally undeserved. This page will help to reassure you that what happens is very normal, certainly non-magical, with generally very rapid and predictable results.

Hypnosis is a state of relaxed concentration which anyone can enter naturally. Hypnosis is an lightly altered state of consciousness, an alpha-theta state, children until their puberty are constantly in such state of relaxed concentration, bypassing the judgment, absorbent to all we say. Such state of mind is induced to a client by a qualified hypnotist, in which state the person becomes highly suggestible to positive suggestions the hypnotist makes. Hypnotists provide their clients with instruction in how to enter this natural state more easily and more effectively through self-hypnosis. The Hypnotist is a facilitator to suggest ways for clients to achieve their goals while client is in hypnosis. Simply put, while you are in trance, hypnotist gives you suggestions for achievement of your goals. While we are in hypnosis our mind is bypassing judgment and all conscious analysis, questions and reasons. We become fully attentive, concentrated on our goals and highly alert. Surprised? Yes, alert, contrary to popular belief that hypnosis is a state of sleep, NO it is a not sleep, it is a great relaxed state of subconscious awareness and peaceful trust.

Hypnosis is induced by the hypnotist's voice, and many are likely to feel surprised that they are not asleep but just simply deeply relaxed and feel peaceful in the state of hypnosis. Many people find their senses to be far more alert than usual during hypnosis, you will hear everything that is going on around you and feel alert - you will certainly 'keep under control' at any time, and you cannot you be manipulated in any way. Unless you are predisposed, you cannot be pressed to reveal your secrets, bank accounts or take clothes off. This can only happen if you WANT to do so, and if you want to entertain, and if you ask the hypnotist to suggest this. Such practices however, are not within the scope of clinical hypnotism, which we practice, so if you are looking for entertainment, perhaps stage hypnosis is your better bet.

Hypnosis, a totally natural phenomenon, is simply a very comfortable and relaxed state during which it is quite easy for you to converse sensibly with the hypnotist. Anyone*can enter the hypnotic state easily, with the exceptions of the truly mentally subnormal, very young children, and anybody under the influence of hard drugs or very large quantities of alcohol. It is inconceivable that any harm could befall anybody in this pleasant state.

You will remember everything that occurs during your hypnosis. Not only remember, but vividly imagine, as if you really are there, where all of this occurs. Hypnosis naturally develops your senses, your creativity, your natural abilities to focus and concentrate and retain in your memory all you want and need to retain.

Hypnosis is a reliable and safe therapeutic technique, it is a fastest therapy known to all, and it is available to all. Freud used to call hypnosis a poor man's psychotherapy.  Hypnotism is a profession which is centuries old and is recognized by many branches of orthodox medicine as a valuable alternative to drugs, to accelerate healing, and to help combat various types of pain.

While not a panacea for all ills, hypnotherapy can be an effective treatment method for a great many problems where psychological or behavioral factors are involved.

Milton Erickson defined hypnosis simply as "communication," and as "concentrating exclusively on your own thoughts, values, memories and beliefs about life." He said that the "trance state is active unconscious learning". During the trance state there is a shift of attention from external to internal reality, the highly focused attention being directed on one experience at a time. It is considered that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotherapist's role is to assist in this process.

*Word of Caution: You should come in for a hypnosis session when completely FREE from the influence of alcohol or drugs. If it hard to concentrate when you are intoxicated.  Young adults under 18 must have parental consent release. The person must want to have personal positive changes to occur and must have a goal to make the work with hypnotist more effective.

Misconceptions about Hypnosis:

Hypnosis is probably one of the most misunderstood professions in the world. The movie and stage image and a real life clinical practice are quite different.

1. When hypnotized people think they would be asleep and not remember anything. So they suggest they bring a friend to a session to monitor and record what happens in the session.  They are often surprised to find out that they are totally aware of the surroundings, the hypnotist's voice, the voices and noises in the other room, traffic outside, etc.

2. Another misconception is that they will be made to do things they would normally refuse to do. The client needs to understand that he/she cannot be made do anything that violates her moral, religious and personal convictions. A client will retain a full and accurate memory of everything during the session after the session is over.

3. One cannot get stuck in hypnosis. Once the voice of the hypnotist announces that the session is over, the client opens his/her eyes and feels awake, alert and clear minded.

4. One cannot disclose the secrets they want to preserve.

5. One cannot do anything against their free will.

Your Conscious Mind

Hypnosis is a wonderful and powerful tool in the hands of a skilled hypnotist. There is conscious mind and there is subconscious mind (unconscious mind). Hypnosis is simply a method to get the conscious mind to step aside and allow the subconscious mind to come forward. In the altered state of hypnosis a hypnotist talks to the subconscious mind directly. This state is also called a state of heightened suggestibility. Our conscious mind has four functions:

  1. Analytical - it is a problem solver;
  2. Rational - it reasons to why things happen;
  3. It houses Will Power - from where we draw a short term boost of determination toward a solution;
  4. It holds short-term (temporary) memory.

Your Subconscious Mind

The subconscious mind represents who and what we are. It houses our:
  1. Habits (Good, Bad, Utility)
    • Good Habits - those that are productive.
    • Bad Habits - those that are destructive ( smoking, compulsive eating, etc.)
    • Utility Habits - Closing the door when leaving, covering your mouth when sneezing, etc.
  2. Emotions
  3. Long Term (Permanent) Memory

Who Can Benefit from Hypnosis?

Anyone whose true desire is to make positive change sin his/her life can benefit from hypnosis/hypnotherapy. The potential is limitless. The added advantage of hypnosis is that the changes made on the subconscious level are long-lasting and more durable, than those made on the conscious level.

Hypnosis is an exceptionally good modality to benefit athletes, business people, artists to help overcome barriers of achievement and maximize their potential. Hypnosis can be used to weed distracting or destructive thoughts and to eliminate fears. It can help you focus, see your goals better, more clearly.

Since learning is a property of the mind, what you can clearly visualize you have a greater chance of achieving. Hypnosis can help you visualize more clearly the goal that needs to be achieved. While physical activity trains reflexes, it is the mental aspect of our being that will enable one to achieve the results. It is the spirit that gives us the determination to do so.

Hypnosis is one of the best methods to overcome fears, anxieties of any kind: fear of heights, fear of public speaking, fear of flying, fear of failing, etc. Special exercises in self-hypnosis do wonders for those fearing public speaking, or having stage fright.

Power of Positive Suggestions (Post-Hypnotic Suggestions)

By making positive suggestions (based on client's set of problems) directly to the subconscious mind at a time when the client truly wants a positive change in life to take place, change will be implemented rapidly. Hypnosis requires two things: a competent certified hypnotist, and a client who is ready and willing to make positive changes in his/her life. Hypnotherapy is a team effort: hypnotherapist - client. There is an agreement - contract between the client and the hypnotherapist in this work together, all directed toward your getting better and getting on with your life.

Positive suggestions are created by the hypnotherapist on the basis of the nature of your problem or set of problems. Suggestions provide positive support and reinforce the strength and discipline toward the positive change in you, in creating your new positive habit. Suggestions are created to be positive in nature, beneficial for you, in present tense, believable for you, measurable (having a set short period of time in mind), and setting a positive reward for completing the task. It is also positively beneficial to be able to create an image of yourself as you want to be, and work creatively on it in detail with the help of your hypnotic guide.

History of Hypnosis

They say the first use of hypnosis was described in the Bible, when God decided to put Adam to sleep (hypnotized him) and took out one his ribs and made Eve. No one knows for certain when the practice of hypnosis originated but it is known that ancient Egyptians used a form of it in their dream temples.

In the eighteen century an Austrian doctor named Franz Anton Mesmer found he could cure people of different diseases without medicine or surgery, and he believed he had a magnetic force which could regulate the flow of magnetic fluids in people to produce cure. In many cases his cures were successful and this method of healing came to be known as Mesmerism.

Mesmer treated very rich and very poor people. For the less well-off he ‘magnetised’ a tree from which hung ribbons or cords for his followers to hold and receive his magnetic therapy.

Another method he used was to fill a large tub with water, containing bottles of iron filings. Protruding out of the tub were iron rods which the common-folk held onto. Many of the patients had violent seizures or fell into deep sleeps which could cure many different kinds of ailments.

Mesmer became very famous in Paris at that time and the French government, at the suggestion of Marie Antoinette, offered him a life pension and enough money to set up a clinic. Because Mesmer refused to allow the government representatives to supervise the clinic a huge controversy raged and in 1784 the King of France appointed a Commission to investigate mesmerism.

The report concluded that animal magnetism and the magnetic field were figments of the imagination and Mesmer’s practices and theories were regarded as worthless. The fact that many people had been cured of their ailments seemed of no consequence.

In the middle of the 19th century a Scottish doctor named James Braid published a book called Neurohypnology or the Study of Nervous Sleep. He invented the word neurohypnosis from which the word hypnosis originated.

Hypnotherapy assists you to discover and access your creative, unlimited potential, thereby allowing for the release of negative or limiting habits and associated ideas. We all experience doubts or setbacks. Resolving problems related to self-esteem, confidence or motivation is one of the most important and valuable capabilities of hypnotherapy.

Ericksonian Hypnosis

MILTON H. ERICKSON, M.D., is generally acknowledged to be the world's leading practitioner of medical hypnosis. His writings on hypnosis are the authoritative word on techniques of inducing trance, experimental work exploring the possibilities and limits of the hypnotic experience, and investigations of the nature of the relationship between hypnotist and subject.
Perhaps also well known is the fact that Dr. Erickson has a unique approach to psychotherapy which represents a major innovation in therapeutic technique, For many years he has been developing effective and practical methods of treatment which may or may not involve the formal induction of trance.

Milton Erickson was the founder of the division in hypnotherapy which deals with problems through indirect suggestion and who was the first to address difficult psychological situations with the help of the creative approach in involving and addressing the subconscious mind. Erickson was the one to say: "Everything we need to know we already know, it is stored in our subconscious mind."
