HypnoBirthing at New York Awareness Center is a philosophy of a holistic approach to safer and more comfortable birth.

"Despite the name, there’s no swinging pendulum, no mantras – just deep breathing, imagery, meditation techniques. Unlike some natural methods, hypnobirthing isn’t about powering through pain, warrior-style. It’s about having a gentle birth, confidence, love and comfort." Laura Wides-Munoz, HypnoBirthing Anyone?

HypnoBirthing® is as a philosophy and a set of techniques to Safer, Easier, More Comfortable way of Birthing with Love, Energy and Family Bonding.  HypnoBirthing® was designed by Marie Mongan, CH, who had taught her daughters to have fun birthing and their daughters too. HypnoBirthing® had provided thousands of women with behavior models and techniques to enjoy birthing and reclaim the power a woman's right to birth naturally and gently.

HypnoBirthing® Classes Schedules 2009

"When one of the nurses wanted to take a closer look, I told her to wait, and with the next surge the head of the baby emerged and was expelled with absolutely no effort on my side. I just lay on the bed watching my body in awe."

"<Doula> reminded me to just follow my body's lead. I did exactly that, and with a final surge my body birthed the baby's torso as effortlessly as it had birthed her head. My husband made sure the baby was placed onto my tummy for immediate bonding. ..And then we just enjoyed holding her and watching her first moves." K W,  April 2009

"We had our minds focused, and were breathing well. Breathing was very important and set the tone for all the surges. It was most apparent when a surge came abruptly after another, caught Claire off guard and she struggled a little when not breathing well...
Hypnobirthing surely guided us through the whole later stage of our pregnancy and we thank you for teaching us."
Claire, Eric and Helia, May 09

Medical science about Hypnosis in pregnancy (To read the full article click here):

Hypnosis during labor is associated with a reduction in analgesia (including epidural analgesia), increased satisfaction with pain management, increased incidence of vaginal birth and reduced use of synthetic oxytocin (Smith, Collins, Cyna, & Crowther, 2006; Cyna, McAuliffe, & Andrew, 2004). Women trained in the use of hypnosis learn to reduce their awareness of pain, and have a shorter first stage of labor (Harmon, Hyman & Tyre, 1990). Benefits of hypnosis may flow on to both the newborn child and women in the postnatal period. Babies born to mothers who received childbirth training in hypnosis have improved Apgar scores when compared with controls (Bobart & Brown, 2002; Harmon, Hyman, & Tyre, 1990). In addition, Goldman (Goldman, 1992) and McCarthy (McCarthy, 1998) have reported that hypnotically trained pregnant women rarely experience postnatal depression. Hypnosis, therefore, appears to offer substantial benefits for both mother and baby.

PAIN IS NOT a pre-requisite to giving birth! Surprised? Yes, HypnoBirthing research shows that pain is not present say those who have used HypnoBirthing techniques.

"...I do have to say though, that both <husband> and the midwife thought I was a bit TOO relaxed several times and that I needed to "feel" more so I could make proper use of the surges when they came- I was so focused on relaxation and transmuting whatever might have been perceived as pain..."

"It was so quiet in our room compared to all the rooms around us- we could hear screaming and banging around and people shouting- and that was the norm on the L and D floor!" More quotes about HypnoBirthing from HypnoBirthing moms click here.

Consider these FACTS:

* We do not advocate home birth only. We support any choice of birth you make: Birthing center, water birth, home birth and even a hospital helped birth. The only thing we do not advocate and do not support is drugged birth, scheduled cesareans and unnecessarily manipulated birthing. We do not support deliberate ignorance and carelessness. We teach you to be comfortable at your birth and be safe, as well as be able to feel the way to WANT to feel, happy, elated, joyful, bonded with your baby and loved ones, orgasmic, loving, light, smiling, or laughing, rather than scared and pained. We help you relieve the fears and concerns before birthing, so you can go into the birthing happy and light and enjoy your time.

When you give birth at home, your feel safer, unrushed, comfortable and supported by your family, than in a hospital facility, where you are pushed to finish up, and agree to measures you don't like, or have no decision privilege. Fact: in 1900s 90% of all births happened at home; in 1955 only 1% of births took place at home. Business of Birthing, a Documentary by Ricky Lake, sites: Hospitals are businesses, beds need to be filled and then emptied, and many women do not have the time to enjoy the birthing process naturally, as it should go on. They are induced, they are sped up, they are made to comply the orders of the hospital, doctors, and the whole business of birthing. Use of Caesarian section is peaking. In the 1970s - only 40%, last decade -70%, since 1996 the case of using caesarian section for birthing had risen to 96%, in 2005 on in every three women had caesarian!

Article-reminder about risks of surgical birthing: A Caesarian Reminder

MORE FACTS:

US has the second worst birth rate in the world. Very high maternal mortality in hospitals.

In Europe and Japan 70% of births are at home and attended by midwives. In the US only 8% are home births.

Vaginally and naturally born babies develop better, learn better, and are more confident and successful faster in life.

Studies show that babies gently stroked and caressed by mothers at least five minutes every hour for four weeks after birth grow to be  more confident and happy.

The vast majority of contemporary young women don't know anything about giving birth to their child. They know very little about pregnancy, breastfeeding and breech or c-section birthing before the doctors begin to tell them what they should do and what they should not do, then it is too late.

With HypnoBirthing® the rate of your baby to be born healthy is higher than in the hospital.

With HypnoBirthing®the rate of your baby grow up healthy is higher than hospital birth.

With HypnoBirthing® awareness the rate of your body to be prepared for birthing is higher.

START NOW~

Come to us to learn, prepare yourself, get comfortable with yourself and your time in being pregnant, use this time creatively to prepare for comfortable birthing:

We will teach you, educate you, help you acquire the necessary skills before giving birth and even before making your decision where to give birth, at home or not, so you can be the decision maker, not your doctor!

Women are largely afraid of birthing. Because of our societal pre-conceived notions and expectations, shared stories since our girlhood, we, women EXPECT PAIN in child birth!!! We expect having a traumatic experience at birth of our child!

And therefore, we are angry, dissatisfied, frustrated, unfulfilled and un-understood in our pregnant wishes, needs and wants!

NOW, the contemporary woman comes out transformed. The woman is assertive in her needs and wants, for herself and her baby. Natural birth with the Marie Mongan method is leading to the highest dose of oxytocin*, endorphins**, numbing the pains and elevating the feeling of love "high" you ever experience.

DO NOT delay, start your preparation for natural comfortable birthing  with a smile with the Marie Mongan Method of Hypnobirthing® now!

NATURAL Hormones - Neurotransmitters PROVIDING the love for your child that your baby needs:

-(from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

*Oxytocin

Oxytocin (IPA: /ˌɔk.sɪ.ˈtoʊ.sɪn/) (Greek, "quick birth") is a mammalian hormone that also acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain. In women, it is released in large amounts after distension of the cervix and vagina during labor, and after stimulation of the nipples, facilitating birth and breastfeeding, respectively. It is occasionally misspelled as oxytoxin. Synthetic oxytocin is sold as medication under the trade names Pitocin and Syntocinon as well as generic oxytocin.

In humans, oxytocin is thought to be released during hugging, touching, and orgasm in both sexes. In the brain, oxytocin is involved in social recognition and bonding, and may be involved in the formation of trust between people and generosity.

** Endorphin

Endorphins are endogenous opioid polypeptide compounds. They are produced by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus in vertebrates during strenuous exercise, excitement, and orgasm; and they resemble the opiates in their abilities to produce analgesia and a sense of well-being. Endorphins work as "natural pain killers", whose effects may be enhanced by other medications.

The term "endorphin" implies a pharmacological activity (analogous to the activity of the corticosteroid category of biochemicals) as opposed to a specific chemical formulation. It consists of two parts: endo- and -orphin; these are short forms of the words endogenous and morphine, intended to mean "a morphine-like substance originating from within the body."

Participation of mother in her child being born is very important.

Who wants to give birth to a baby not knowing what is going on, asleep, unprepared?

Who wants to give birth unknowingly losing the innate connection with the child? In advance developing the post partum depression? Unable to control her feelings? Unaware of her baby's first needs?

Who wants to bring the baby into life unaware of how the baby chose you, or what the baby wants from your presence?

Instead, CHOOSE to be aware, happy and prepare to greet your baby's arrival with a smile and support of your family, FULLY CONSCIOUS and strong to hold the baby in your first AWE in seeing this little life to the big world! With Hypnobirthing® you can do anything and still be aware and give birth happily with a smile.

Testimonials:

"A few years ago I made a transition to HypnoBirthing®, and I now truly believe that normal birthing does not have to involve pain." Dr. Lorne R. Campbell, Sr., Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, University of Rochester, and SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine. In the foreword to the book by Marie Mongan, HypnoBirthing, The Mongan Method.

" I heartily recommend this ... well thought-out program ..., for its contribution toward making the birth of children a positive and gentle step on their way to a better world." Dr. Lorne R. Campbell.

Three minutes after going through the labor and delivery doors, I had Greer.

I went in for a 41st week appointment and had an ultrasound. My amniotic fluid was very low and the placenta looked old and had lots of calcification. They wanted to induce immediately, but I didn’t want to, so they checked me and I was almost fully effaced and 3 cm. We decided to strip my membranes to try to bring on labor (which made me 4cm) and have an IV to try to increase fluids to buy me another day or two. The fluids didn’t do much so I went home that night scheduled to come back the next morning to check the fluid again and get a second opinion about whether induction was necessary. The next morning, I started having back labor at about 6:15am. I spent a lot of time in the shower and in the "polar bear" position. We decided to head to the hospital at 8:15am as my surges had started coming about a minute apart from about 5 minutes apart at 6:15am. Steve ran in to get a wheel chair and rushed me to labor and delivery. The nurse who had given me the IV the day before was on her way back from getting coffee and saw us coming. She rushed us through the doors at 9am and by the time I took off my skirt, I had a strong urge to push. Three minutes after going through the labor and delivery doors, I had Greer.

Giving Birth: Upright Positions Shorten First Stage Labor
Science Daily
April 16, 2009

New findings by Cochran researchers indicate that lying down during the early stages of childbirth may slow progress of labor. Data from 21 studies involving 3,706 births show that those women who labored in an upright position had a shorter labor than those who lay down. Researchers stress that more studies are needed to understand how birthing positions relate to pain, control and satisfaction of the birth experience.

Don't you want a healthy alert baby?

This is baby Victoria Charles at 8 months photographed at a seminar in Lambertville, NJ, June 2007

Born naturally with a smile on mom's face. This baby is more developed and looks more mature than babies her age. She had never had any vaccinations and never was sick, or with any discomfort, (except her teeth are beginning to come). Her parents let her explore her environment in a natural way, Victoria crawls into the most unheard of places and tastes and touches things, even off the floor, without her parents going "Don't touch! Don't eat this!" she immediately drops from her mouth food that is not clean  or good, without swallowing, something that is not good or edible, and her explorations are resulting in her being environment conscious and aware of her body boundaries, keeping herself safe. She can sit on the table with her parents and other kids in the family eating dinner, somehow being aware of the edge of the table under her little touchy, balancing herself in a way to stay stable and vertical. Of course, father and mother are near and watching! Of course they are available and their arms are around to protect her! Victoria is well fed by her mother's breasts and longs to have a taste of each meal the adults have and at her age she is aware of what other foods taste like and has her preferences and dislikes. For example, she dislikes oranges, and likes apples, she likes some meats and cheeses, and some breads, pasta and meat sauce, and some Chinese and Indian cuisine. She also does not mind new people in her environment and greets them in a friendly way. She rarely cries and most of her time she spends in quiet research of her surroundings. She can stand being "wet" for hours, she is free from all vaccinations and is happy without any medications.

Do you want your baby to be healthy and happy? Choose HypnoBirthing method of birth.

When is the best time to start your HypnoBirthing® class?

As soon as possible. Sign up as soon as you know you are pregnant. Allow yourself time to integrate the learning of the material, exercises and techniques. Allow yourself and your partner to clear the past preconceived notions about birthing, clear all fears and concerns, all negative non-useful patterns in your behavior, non-effective communication to yourself and others. Instead, leave plenty of time to create the space for the new patterns, positive effective patterns and language of positive self-talk and re-creating the new defaults for breathing, relaxation and acquiring the skill of listening to your body, which is a must for your peaceful labor. Why not prepare at your own pace, in a safe and calm and more comfortable way? You want to begin to eat the right food, exercise your body in a correct way, perhaps learn about where to get a pre-natal massage and herbals, natural whole experience for yourself and your baby.

We teach moms and their partners as early as 20 weeks and as late as 39 weeks of pregnancy in these classes.

How determined are you to have a birth of your desire?

Hypnobirthing® Benefits At a Glance

  • Hypnobirthing® - the Mongan Method - is a philosophy, a live active technique, not just a theory. The method itself is not new, it has been in existence thousands of years. The concept of comfort during natural vaginal birthing was restored in its value by Dr. Dick-Read, an English obstetrician, in 1920s.

  • The method teaches the absence of:

    • fear

    • tension

    • pain

  • Instead it teaches to recapture the

    • relaxation

    • calmness

    • serene frame of mind

    • comfort instilling techniques

  • as well as restoring a powerful sense of a woman's self-esteem in birthing

  • recapturing a strong sense of owning your birthing experience

  • creating a healthy and powerful natural environment in your mind and

  • teaching your body to reawaken to its natural knowledge

  • Hypnobirthing® is not a trance or sleep

Instead Hypnobirthing® is a state of

  • alert being,

  • full awareness

  • focus on the positive,

  • focusing attention on the process of birthing

With HypnoBirthing® you are present to your baby when he/she is coming to you, you are able to watch the baby finding your breast (Breastfeeding Healthy) and be happy when you begin to bond.

You are present at your baby's birth, not absent by drugs and epidurals.

You enjoy your baby's birth.

You are having a good time giving birth.

Fears in Pregnancy

Fear in pregnancy can be detrimental to your birth expectations. In HypnoBIrthing classes we alleviate this fear through hypnotic exercises and exercises, and teach you to become fearless. However, in class we do not address in depth some issues that may have been in the past.

If you feel that there are more fears than a normal anticipation, past abuse, or there has been a miscarriage, loss of pregnancy, special circumstances, etc., please refer to our Hypnotherapy section and schedule yourself for a healing session. You will be surprised how soon you will experience change in your perceptions; the majority of clients come away with a sense of well-being and peace. The earlier you address these issues the safer your birthing experience. Just allow yourself and your baby have the experience you deserve and want instead of suffering the pain of the past or carrying on with the baggage that no longer works for you. This takes courage.

To become courageous and loving mother call Morrin for hypnotherapy and skills of self-hypnosis for pregnancy. Liberate yourself with love and compassion from the skilled healing practitioner. We work with techniques in Reiki®, Hypnosis and MythoSelf®.

We work with you so instead of looking back you feel accomplished in going forward.

AFTER THE BIRTH - How to avoid post-partum depression article and video

Russian Water Birth

A Russian woman travels to Israel to Dead Sea to birth her baby in the sea waters

A Russian woman, Irina Kolosova, comes to Israel Dead Sea to birth her third son in the waters of the sea. She birthed her first two sons in the waters of the Black Sea. She follows her feeling to birth naturally in the natural waters of the sea, but the Black Sea waters are too cold this time of year. Irina is a children's swimming trainer.

Irina confesses that she did serious preparation to avoid any circumstances to prevent her birth from being successful. She meditated and stretched, prayed and swam daily. She had a team of relatives to support her. She talks about her feelings of sadness about the modern medical science addressing birth as illness and therefore treating it like illness in the hospital setting, disallowing a woman to enjoy the feeling of freedom, connection with nature and love for her baby.

Watch her natural birth in the sea waters, in real time, early evening swim turning into a baby birthing before sunset. Allow yourself to awe about the primal natural beauty of this act.

(The video is in Iddish and Russian, no English version yet, so you just watch and in 8 minutes you get the feeling from this picture)

Breech Natural Water Birth

A slap in the face to the western medical community who are unable to birth breech babies other than through a cesarean! Enjoy the peace around this birth and the facility with which the baby makes stepping motions with his feet.

As study was done to prove that hypnosis is effective for pregnant women.

Hypnosis during pregnancy and childbirth has been shown to reduce labor
analgesia use and other medical interventions. We aimed to investigate
whether there was a difference in hypnotizability in pregnant and
nonpregnant women. Study participants had hypnotizability measured by
the Creative Imagination Scale (CIS) in the third trimester of pregnancy
and subsequently between 14 and 28 months postpartum and when not
pregnant. The 37 participants who completed the study gave birth in the
largest maternity unit in South Australia between January 2006 and March
2007. CIS scores were increased in women when pregnant (Mean 23.5, SD
6.9) compared to when they were not pregnant (Mean 18.7, SD 6.6), p <
0.001. The mean effect size was 0.84 suggesting that the hypnotizability
change was both statistically significant and clinically meaningful. Our
study findings support previous evidence showing that women are more
hypnotizable when pregnant than when not pregnant.
