PINK ELEPHANT Try not to see it in your mind's eye and try not to think about it. I will tell you all about the pink elephant you are imagining, despite my request for you NOT to think about a pink elephant. Now, try not to think about your living room. Try hard NOT to PICTURE IT in your mind. If you can't, try NOT to IMAGINE if you have any thing hanging on the walls in your living room. If you can't, then try this. NOT TO IMAGINE? Don't THINK NOW, and try not to IMAGINE, if this elephant will fit into your living room, and if it did, how it is best to position it. What? You can't resist the temptation to imagine the elephant and try to fit it into your room? SUBCONSCIOUS MIND By now, you already guessed what we are doing here. I am showing you how your subconscious mind works. If you read, follow what you read, or listen and follow what you listen to, you go into a trance-like state we call the hypnotic state. Hypnosis is a natural state of mind, it is not only natural, everyone is doing it all the time. Everyone is moving from trance state to trance state. You're in a work trance at work, and on the weekend you're in a play trance, or a Mom or Dad trance. You respond differently to the people around you at home, than the people at work. The cool thing is that you can become conscious of how you use your different trances, and you can become more effective in every area of your life.
When you work with a professional hypnotist, he/she helps you design the trances that are most likely to get the result you're looking for. For now, understand this and you will have a powerful piece of information that goes a long way to deciphering the code of your subconscious and your behavior.
Your subconscious mind does not make a distinction about what is suggested in a positive or negative frame. Don't' think and think are the same for our subconscious. This is why when I say don't think of a pink elephant, your mind AUTOMATICALLY goes to the picture of an elephant.
SUGGESTIONS can be Negative and Positive If you say to yourself: I am not afraid, this won't happen, I am not fat, I am not hungry, you essentially giving yourself a suggestion for being AFRAID, FAT and HUNGRY, and THIS will happen, because you will continue to think about it. Instead, we offer you positively framed suggestions, like you are slim, you are brave, and your are doing the behaviors that create that outcome, etc.
Don't Crash Into the Trees! When I first learned to ski I was afraid of running into the trees on either side of the trail. The more I tried to avoid the trees, the more I found myself heading for them. So I would make myself fall before I got close enough to run into them, and get hurt. But there's no joy when it's skiing is just about not getting hurt. It wasn't until I got some help by taking a few lessons from a really good instructor.
Professional Help Made the Difference Michael, my instructor noticed what I was doing. I was putting my attention on not hitting the trees. It was true, I was gauging how I was doing, by how well I was avoiding them, which meant I was in fear and moving away from what I wanted all the time. He taught me to find spots further down the trail and ski from one of those spots to the next, and then the next, and then the next.......amazing! When I started putting my attention on where I was going, the trees became unimportant. As long as I had a spot to ski to, the trees didn't exist for me. If I went a little off course, I could correct my direction or stop easily and refocus on the spot. The trees no longer existed for me, no threat because that wasn't where I was going, and a tree could never grow fast enough to spring up on the way to my destination.
You Can Make Change But first we have to know "what you want" (where you are going...remember the skiing example) to be able to make suggestions clear for you (pick the spots you are heading for,) so your subconscious will accept them and follow them for change, instead of hitting the trees and getting hurt.
